Mario Kart 8 is first UK number one of 2022 – Games charts 8 January

Who needs a sequel? (pic: Nintendo)

Amidst rumours of Mario Kart 9 being in development, the most recent entry in the series has been at number one for the last three weeks.

There might be many reasons Nintendo is considering making a new Mario Kart but concern about sales of the current version is not one of them. The game was the first number one of 2022 and now the second, despite being five years old – and the underlying Wii U game three years older than that.

The game’s success is indicative of high sales for the Nintendo Switch in general, with five exclusives in the top 10, including post-Christmas favourite Ring Fit Adventure.

As you’d expect, there’s little other movement in the chart, with no new retail releases so far and sales in general always being low at this time of year.
