Marin Odegaard makes Real Madrid plea amid speculation on his Arsenal future

Martin Odegaard has implored Real Madrid to let him know whether or not he has a future at the Spanish club, before he makes a definitive decision on his future.

The Norway international was effectively deemed surplus to requirements by Zinedine Zidane in January and joined Arsenal on loan until the end of the season.

Odegaard made a bright start to his stint in north London, scoring crucial goals in victories over Olympiacos and Tottenham, while his presence helped ease the creative burden on emerging youngster Emile Smith Rowe.

The 22-year-old’s influence has waned, however, over the course of the last six weeks but Mikel Arteta is said to be keen to retain the playmakers’ services.

Odegaard’s future could be determined by Zidane’s future, with reports over the weekend claiming the Real boss has already informed his players that he will be stepping down at the end of the season.

The Frenchman’s potential departure could offer Odegaard the opportunity to reignite his career at the Bernabeu, but he wants his parent club to make their intentions known as soon as possible.

He told Sky Germany: ‘I am happy here at Arsenal, but we will see after the season what will happen.

‘At the moment I don’t know. I’m owned by Real Madrid, so we have to speak to them. It’s important to know what they want.’

Dani Ceballos, meanwhile, also on loan from Real to Arsenal, will not return to north London and could join his former club Real Betis on a permanent basis this summer having failed to convince Arteta.

The Gunners boss is expected to oversee a major overhaul of his squad in the close season but has warned any player wishing to depart who is currently under contract is likely to remain part of his plans.

Reports earlier this week claimed Willian could follow his compatriot David Luiz out of the club after a desperately underwhelming campaign following his move from Chelsea, but Arteta, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Crystal Palace, played down that likelihood.

He said: ‘First of all we signed a player with an incredible talent, a proven talent and performance level in this league, and this season has been difficult,’ said Arteta.

‘I take full responsibility because I have to be the one getting the best out of him and we had moments but not to the level that he did before.

‘This is an assessment that we will do individually with the players and with Edu, the board and the ownership to make the right decisions for the future. Every player that is under contract is very likely to be here with us next season.’
