Mansfield have announced the signing of Nicky Maynard with a bizarre transfer video that sees the club’s chief executive pick the striker up from the airport.
In the video, Maynard, who has joined the Stags from Bury, is collected from Faro Airport in Portugal – where the squad have headed for pre-season training – and taken to a villa to put pen to paper on his new contract.
The 32-year-old striker travels in a convertible Rolls-Royce with Mansfield chief executive Carolyn Radford at the wheel.
When he arrives at the house the forward shakes hands with some young fans before getting down to business and putting pen to paper in front of the snappers.
All the while Fergie song Glamorous, which features Ludacris, is played in the background.
Clubs used to announce transfers in pretty ordinary terms until the birth of social media.
These days clubs spend time thinking up humorous and unique ways to announce to the world they have made a new signing.
Stags’ manager John Dempster spoke out about the club landing Maynard.
On the club’s official website, Dempster said: “We are delighted to welcome Nicky to the football club.
“He comes with great experience and is of a real pedigree.
“Once the CEO [Carolyn Radford] finalised this deal with his representatives, I was impressed with the football questions Nicky asked about our new campaign.
“He is a goalscorer, team player and someone who our young attacking players will be able to learn from by watching and communicating with him.
“I would like to say thank you to our owners, who have yet again come up trumps with their support of me.”
Maynard started his career at Crewe before heading to Bristol City in 2008.
Since then he has represented six British clubs and made 41 appearances for Bury last season, in which he netted 22 times.
