Manny Pacquiao has hinted he could retire from boxing following his meeting with Yordenis Ugas next week.

Pacquiao was scheduled to meet IBF and WBC welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr in one of the biggest fights of the year on 21 August but this week the Texan was forced to pull out after suffering an eye injury which requires surgery.

WBA (Super) champion Ugas has been drafted in as a replacement and will defend the title Pacquiao feels he was unnecessarily stripped of earlier this year.

While not the super-fight his meeting with Spence promised to be, the stakes are high for Pacquiao when he takes on Cuba’s Ugas.

‘I feel great. My team has full confidence in my capabilities even at 42 years old and they note that I still have what it takes to face elite calibre opponents,’ Pacquiao told Betway Insider US.

‘Although the recuperation period of a 42-year-old may not be the same as a 25-year-old fighter, I still love what I am doing. I’m enjoying training and I’m learning more about myself everyday.

‘Everything is top secret, of course. I’m training and challenging myself daily and I am inspired to perform at my best owing to the fact that this might be my last fight. I’ve never given predictions. I always climb the ring ready and prepared for everything.

‘Everything is at stake as this might be my last fight. I might as well finish the race with a spectacular performance.

‘Legacies are subjective to the minds of the fans. Of course, a win for me after so long out would be very grand for my country and family.’

Pacquiao initially retired from boxing in 2016 but returned to the ring eight months later. He has fought five times since then, losing just once in a hugely controversial defeat to Jeff Horn in 2017 but proved he is still very much among the elite with a masterful victory over Keith Thurman in the summer of 2019.
