Manchester United would win the title this season if they had Thomas Tuchel in charge, says Paul Merson

Paul Merson says Manchester United would win the Premier League title this season if Thomas Tuchel was their manager, instead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After taking over from Frank Lampard back in January of last season, Tuchel guided the Blues to Champions League glory as well a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.

The west London club have started the new campaign in a similarly dominant fashion having won four of their opening five league games, including a resounding 3-0 victory over Tottenham last weekend.

In that game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Tuchel proved just how tactically astute he is when he substituted off Mason Mount for N’Golo Kante with the match goalless at half-time.

Kante had an immediate impact in the centre of the park, and the Blues dominated the clash for the entire second period.

Although United are on the same points as Chelsea in the league, they have struggled in other competitions. Solskjaer’s side lost their opening Champions League game to Young Boys and got kicked out of the Carabao Cup after a 2-1 defeat to West Ham.

And Arsenal hero Merson feels that if Tuchel were in charge at Old Trafford, the Red Devils would claim the title.

‘If Thomas Tuchel was manager of Manchester United, they would win the league,’ Merson told the Daily Star.

‘He is that good. And he can show it again when Chelsea take on Manchester City this weekend.

‘United are not going to win the league this season, in my opinion. But if they had a manager like Tuchel it would be different.

‘He sees the game. What he did last Sunday was a masterstroke, taking off Mason Mount and putting on N’Golo Kante.

‘You’ve got to remember, Mount is one of Chelsea’s go-to players, one of their best players. But he brought him off and they literally ripped Tottenham to shreds.

‘If that had been a boxing match you would have had to stop it because it was getting dangerous.

‘Players have vision. It’s the same with managers. They see games. Top players see a pass. Top managers see the game.

‘Other managers just stick their best 11 players on the pitch and say: “Go and do what you want…”

‘It was a big deal bringing Mount off. How many other managers would have been brave enough to do that?’
