Manchester United are keeping tabs on Valencia striker Maxi Gomez with the view of making a move for him in the summer, according to reports in Spain.

The 23-year-old only joined Valencia in the summer, signing for €14.5m (£12.2m) from Celta Vigo, but is already attracting interest from other suitors.

The Uruguay international has scored nine goals in 18 La Liga appearances for his new side after netting 30 times in his two seasons with Celta.

Spanish radio network Cadena SER, report that Manchester United have been following his progress closely, and that scouts were in attendance at the Mestalla on Saturday as Gomez scored twice in a 2-0 win over Barcelona.

No move is expected during the current transfer window, but Gomez is on the list of targets that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would like to recruit in the summer, if he is still in a job.

However, the Uruguayan is unlikely to come cheap as Valencia inserted a release clause in his contract worth €140m (£118.3m).

United would certainly not be willing to meet that valuation, but with the release clause in place and his contract running until the summer of 2024, Valencia are in a very strong bargaining position.

The striker came close to moving to West Ham in the summer before Valencia pounced for his signature, and Gomez admits the lure of the Spanish side was much greater than a switch to the Premier League.

‘I was relaxed,’ he told the Guardian in November. ‘There was a lot of talk of a lot of clubs – Barcelona, England – but I left it with my sister, my family.

‘They were the ones who handled it all with my agents. West Ham was real, a big club. But the truth is that when I found out about Valencia I didn’t hesitate: because of the language, the club, the league.’
