Former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde is in talks with Manchester United over becoming the club’s interim manager.

The Spaniard left the Nou Camp last January after a dismal run of results but not before winning the league title twice in his three years at the club.

United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskajer on Sunday following the 4-1 defeat to Watford and they announced their intention of appointing an interim manager for the remainder of the season, before taking stock of the situation in the summer.

And the Guardian say Valverde has held talks with John Murtough over a move to Old Trafford and has even gone as far to sound out potential players to add to the squad in the January transfer market.

Having managed the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Barcelona, it’s felt Valverde would be capable of overseeing United’s star-studded squad.

Mauricio Pochettino remains United’s first choice to become the club’s next permanent manager but it’s unclear whether the Red Devils can lure him away from Paris Saint-Germain midway through a campaign.

It appears more likely that United will have to wait until the summer to hire the Argentine, when he’ll have just 12 months to run on his deal in the French capital.

Michael Carrick has taken temporary charge of the side and he’s made two huge selection calls for tonight’s Champions League clash against Villarreal.

Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes have been dropped, with Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial coming into the side.
