Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson intervenes over Cristiano Ronaldo transfer

Sir Alex Ferguson personally reached out to Cristiano Ronaldo to convince him to snub a transfer to Manchester City and return to Manchester United instead, according to reports.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner informed Juventus this week that he wanted to leave Turin and Premier League champions City quickly emerged as the frontrunners for his signature despite Ronaldo’s allegiances to the red half of Manchester.

That stirred United into action, with the Red Devils now the favourites to land Ronaldo after making a rival move to bring the 36-year-old back to the Premier League.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United legend Sir Alex played a crucial role in convincing his former player to reject City and phoned him up on Friday morning.

At that point, City were the only club to have held talks with Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, and last season’s Serie A top scorer was giving serious consideration to the move.

But he shares an excellent relationship with Sir Alex, viewing him as a father figure, and once he spoke to the Scot and it became clear that United would make a concrete offer the Portugal international quickly rejected City’s approach.

Thanks to Sir Alex’s intervention, Ronaldo is now closing in on a sensational return to Old Trafford and United are preparing to make their first formal contract offer.

Ronaldo was seen boarding a private jet in Turin on Friday and is believed to have flown to Lisbon, which is where he will undergo his United medical if everything goes to plan.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was effusive in his praise of Ronaldo at a press conference on Friday, saying: ‘I didn’t think Cristiano was gonna turn out leaving Juventus and it’s been speculation this morning and the last few days.

‘We’ve always had good communication. I know Bruno [Fernandes]’s been talking to him as well and he knows what we feel about him. And if he was ever gonna move away from Juventus he knows we’re here.

‘We focus on the ones we have there, I don’t want to speculate too much on Cristiano, what’s happening there with the press.

‘I’ve said many times with speculation, when you’re Man United, when you’re Ronaldo, when you’re Messi, when you’re Pogba, when you’re Bruno, you have to read a lot about yourselves. So let’s see what happens with Cristiano, he’s such a legend of this club.

‘Cristiano has been a legend of this club, he is a legend of this club, he’s the greatest player of all time, if you ask me. I was fortunate enough to play with him, I coached him when I got my job. He almost retired me in that Wolverhampton game when I got injured because he kept switching sides!

‘Such a tremendous human being, as well. Let’s see what happens with Cristiano. Everyone who’s played with him has a soft spot for him.’
