Manchester United hero Paul Parker calls for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to drop Harry Maguire

Former Manchester United star Paul Parker wants to see Harry Maguire dropped for the trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, with Raphael Varane partnering Victor Lindelof in central defence.

Maguire had a torrid time in United’s 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford last Sunday, with the England defender to do almost nothing to stop the wave of attacks from the visitors.

The most calamitous of moments came before Liverpool’s second goal when Maguire comically collided with Luke Shaw, leading to Trent Alexander-Arnold squaring for Diogo Jota to tap in.

The Red Devils have the chance to bounce back when they travel to north London on Saturday and Parker wants Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to change things up throughout the team.

The former England international – who won two Premier League titles with United – wants Edinson Cavani and Donny van de Beek to come into the first team, but he would also like to see fit-again Raphael Varane return to the side at the expense of Maguire, blasting the defensive talents of Maguire and Shaw in the process.

‘It’s going to be a mini cup final,’ Parker told Eurosport. ‘Neither manager can afford to lose it. He has to make changes, because if he doesn’t it will cause a toxic atmosphere amongst the travelling fans looking for a change.

‘Solskjaer needs to make changes and the right changes. You can’t leave out Cristiano Ronaldo but he has to play Edinson Cavani to get some work rate up front. Ronaldo does not want to close down but Solskjaer has to try something in midfield. He does not need two holding mids against Spurs.

‘If it was me I would go with Fred because of his quicker feet and Donny van de Beek. I saw him play there against Spurs for Ajax and he was brilliant but he needs a run in the team.

‘If Raphaël Varane is fit I would play him alongside Victor Lindelof. I saw less issues with him than the other three in the Liverpool game. It’s terrible what happens with Maguire and Shaw down the left-hand side. Neither can defend one against one, communicate or defend space.

‘United can’t keep clean sheets but I’m going to go with my heart and say they win this one.’

Solskjaer confirmed that Varane is back to full fitness after a groin problem, saying that the only absentee on Saturday will be the suspended Paul Pogba after his red card against Liverpool.

‘Paul is suspended,’ he said. ‘But, apart from that, it’s a fully fit squad. Which is a very strange position to be in, 25 outfield players and five keepers this week.’
