Ralf Rangnick says he is ‘very much looking’ forward to meeting former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson again after two previous meetings with the club legend.

The 63-year-old German coach was officially unveiled as United’s new interim boss this week and will be in the dugout for the first time on Sunday for the home clash against Crystal Palace.

Rangnick gave his first press conference to the media on Friday morning before sitting down with MUTV to reflect on his own career to date.

The German first crossed paths with United when his Schalke side were paired with them in the Champions League semi-finals during the 2010-11 season.

United secured a 2-0 win away in Germany before an emphatic 4-1 score line at Old Trafford sent them into the final, with Ferguson inviting Rangnick back to his office for a drink after the contest.

‘We spoke after the second leg here. He invited me into his office at Old Trafford in the stadium,’ Rangnick told MUTV.

‘He enjoyed the glass of wine more than I did because we had no chance whatsoever in that game.

‘We were missing four or five important first 11 players at the time.

‘The mere fact that we qualified for the semi-finals with this team against Inter – we beat Inter 5-2 away and 2-1 at home – nobody had expected that at the time. That was the first meeting, the first time I met Sir Alex.

‘We met again in 2015 at an event of the Kicker sports magazine. We had dinner together and I’m very much looking forward to meeting him in the next couple of weeks.’
