Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not believe David de Gea and Alex Telles will be sidelined for very long after both players picked up knocks in Manchester United’s win against Southampton.

The Red Devils fell two goals behind at St Mary’s on Sunday, with De Gea injuring himself as he tried to keep out James Ward-Prowse’s brilliant free-kick, clattering into the post.

He had to be replaced at half-time by Dean Henderson, though United managed to mount a fightback in the match even without their usual number one as a strike from Bruno Fernandes and an Edinson Cavani brace secured a 3-2 victory.

Midway through the second half Telles also had to limp out of the contest, replaced by Brandon Williams, though Solskjaer is hopefully that neither of his players will be out of action for long.

‘It’s a knock just above the knee, so we’ll have a scan and a check on him tomorrow,’ said Solskjaer when asked about De Gea at his post-match press conference.

‘Hopefully he can be ready for Wednesday but I can’t promise you anything now.’

On Telles he added: ‘Alex had an issue towards the end, but hopefully it won’t be too bad.’

That duo are not the only injury headaches Solskjaer has, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Luke Shaw missing the trip to Southampton, but they are all close to a return.

‘Paul and Scott hopefully they can start training with us tomorrow, I don’t know, but hopefully,’ Solskjaer continued.

‘Luke I think is out still. We’re not 100% sure. Jesse [Lingard] is back. Phil Jones is out. David I don’t know how he’ll react to this knock and bang and hopefully that’s it.’

On how Henderson performed after replacing De Gea, he added: ‘Dean came on, very assured, had a couple of half-saves to make, but he was tidy and safe with the ball at his feet as well.’
