Man Utd are looking to sign Ousmane Dembele on a free this summer with the forward’s Barcelona future set to expire when the season ends but Xavi is keen to keep hold of him
Manchester United are urging Ousmane Dembele to join them on a free transfer in the summer, according to reports in Spain.
The Barcelona forward will soon be out of contract at the Nou Camp and is weighing up his options.
Dembele, signed as Neymar’s replacement back in 2017, has been hampered by injuries throughout his time at the club and has made just one start this term.
They have tabled a new offer to the Frenchman, but he is yet to commit his future to the Catalans.
Mundo Deportivo claim that United have looked to sign the 24-year-old on several occasions during the past and are now pushing the player and his agent to accept their offer.
Dembele can sign with a new club from January with his contract expiring in the summer.
However new boss Xavi and Dani Alves are both attempting to convince the winger to stay put.
The new Barcelona boss said at his unveiling: “Dembele in his position can be the best player in the world. He has to be a world class player.
“It’s important to have a winning mentality and consistency. We have to help him.”
Whilst Alves echoed that sentiment, saying: “Dembélé is an exceptional player who needs to understand that he is Barça and to believe that he is a great player, he can do many great things here.”
The Mundo Deportivo report has claimed that Dembele ‘already saw himself’ at the Red Devils, but is now thinking twice.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose position is under huge pressure, signed Jadon Sancho back in the summer as he sought to add a new winger.
The former Borussia Dortmund star is struggling to make an impact however which could yet influence the club’s thinking if things do not improve.
United’s squad could also see several attackers leave with Jesse Lingard, a man capable of playing out wide, rejecting a new deal and looking to leave as early as January.
Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial are also linked with the exit door, albeit for different reasons.
It could mean United need to bolster their options in attack, with Dembele seemingly on their radar.
Xavi will get the first chance to shape his squad in January, although more changes are likely to occur in the summer.
RB Leipzig’s Dami Olmo is among those linked with Barcelona and his arrival could affect Dembele’s playing time if he does stay put.
