Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he expected Edinson Cavani to be banned after he was charged over a comment he posted on social media.

Cavani was handed a three-game ban and fined £100,000 after replying to a friend on Instagram and using the Spanish term ‘negrito’. which translates as ‘little black’.

The post was quickly deleted and apologies were issued but the FA charged the former Paris Saint-Germain striker with ‘misconduct fo a breach of FA Rule E3’.

As a result, he is missing from United’s side for the Premier League clash on Friday night as well as their next two matches.

While Solskjaer is convinced Cavani is not a racist, he expected the ban to be dished out.

‘When the charge came through you expect Edinson to get a ban,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘One thing is for sure, he’s not a racist, there was no malice. His words were taken out of context.

‘He accepted it and we just want to move on.’

Cavani posted a statement on Twitter responding to the decision on Thursday.

‘Hello everyone. I do not want to extend much in this uncomfortable moment for me,’ said the Uruguayan.

‘I want to share with you that I accept the disciplinary sanction knowing that I am foreign to English language customs, but I do not share the point of view.

;I apologise if I offended someone with an expression of affection towards a friend, nothing further in my intention. Those who know me know that my effort always seeks the simplest joy and friendship!

‘I appreciate the countless expressions of support and affection. ‘My heart is at peace, because I know that I always expressed myself with affection according to my culture and way of life. I send you a sincere hug.’
