Man Utd lose Jean-Kevin Augustin transfer race to Leeds due to 'disorganisation'

Manchester United’s incompetence behind the scenes caused them to miss out on a transfer target this week due to their “disorganisation”.

The Red Devils reportedly made a last-ditch bid to sign RB Leipzig’s Jean-Kevin Augustin, but lost out to Championship side Leeds.

Augustin’s agent persuaded the striker to move to the Yorkshire club on loan rather than sign for United – whose offer came too late, and was not strong enough.

The Athletic report that Augustin’s team were keen for the 22-year-old to link up with Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, after hearing good things from another of their clients, Benjamin Mendy.

Man City star Mendy praised Bielsa’s influence on his own career after playing under the Italian during their time together at Marseille.

That proved to be the concluding factor, however Leeds were also “proactive” in their approach, impressing Augustin’s entourage, while United’s indecision cost them.

Augustin has been on loan with Monaco since the start of the season, where he made a total of 12 appearances, scoring once in the process.

Leeds were on the lookout for a new striker after youngster Eddie Nketiah returned to Arsenal on loan.

It is the latest blow to United in this transfer window, who as yet have been unable to add to their squad, and raises further question marks about the capability of those working on the club’s recruitment.

Negotiations over the transfer of Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes appear to have struck an obstacle as the clubs struggle to agree on a fee.

United’s desperation for another forward in their ranks has been heightened following the injury to Marcus Rashford.

RMC report United are now in talks with Augustin’s former Monaco teammate Islam Slimani, who is on loan at the French club from Leicester.

Tottenham are also weighing up a move for the Algerian, who has averaged a goal and an assist in less than every two appearances at Monaco.

Despite being a regular under former boss Leonardo Jardim, Slimani has only featured in 30 minutes of first-team action under his successor Robert Moreno since his appointment in December.
