Man Utd learn Saul Niguez transfer criteria with Red Devils ‘in contact’ over move

Manchester United could bring Saul Niguez to Old Trafford for around £34million if the Red Devils decide to pursue his services this summer, according to reports. The Atletico Madrid man has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months, with a number of clubs believed to be keeping tabs on his situation.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Barcelona have been credited with an interest in Saul, while United are also believed to be keen admirers.

He played 33 times in La Liga last season as Atletico were crowned Spanish champions for the first time since 2014.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to strengthen his midfield ranks ahead of the new campaign, and a move for Saul could prove to be a shrewd addition.

The Atletico man still has five years left to run on his current deal but is reportedly considering his future as he weighs up the idea of a fresh challenge.

If United decide to mount an approach for the midfielder in the coming weeks, they would have to fork out between £34m and £38.3m in order to secure his signature, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

“Manchester United are among the clubs that have been in contact with Saul Niguez’s agent,” Romano told The United Stand.

“They have an interest in the player and consider him one of the biggest opportunities on the market. 40 to 45 million [euros] will get a deal done, [but] no bid yet.”

Atletico boss Diego Simeone recently admitted that he would be disappointed if Saul leaves the club this summer, but stressed that no grudges would be held in the event of a move away.

“We cannot put aside what is rumoured and talked about,” said the 51-year-old in a press conference last month.

“If he has to leave, [I’ll] give him a big hug, wish him the best with the boys who gave us life and to continue being friends, as always. Either to Barcelona or elsewhere.”

United have also been linked with a number of other potential midfield targets in recent months, including Leon Goretzka of Bayern Munich and West Ham United star Declan Rice.

However, Saul would represent a significantly cheaper option at a maximum price of £38.3m, which could work in United’s favour amid the club’s ongoing spending spree.

The Red Devils have already spent around £77m on the signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, with Tom Heaton also joining on a free transfer.

Raphael Varane’s impending move, which should be officially confirmed within the next week or so, looks set to increase this figure by another £42m.

Solskjaer previously declared that he would be looking to make a number of calculated additions to his United side over the summer months as he gears up for a renewed Premier League title bid.

“I hope we will strengthen with two or three players, we definitely need to challenge higher up the table,” said the Red Devils boss.

“We are too far behind to think it will come by itself. We’re not where we aim to be, we’ve got ambitions to move one place further up but it’s been steady improvement.”
