Manchester United have confirmed Edinson Cavani will wear the iconic No.7 shirt for the club.
Cavani has been snapped up on a free transfer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain and put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Red Devils.
He was unveiled as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s latest attacking option on deadline day.
And the club have now confirmed he has been handed the historic shirt previously worn by the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The shirt number has been vacant since the departure of Alexis Sanchez to Inter Milan after his miserable spell at Old Trafford.
But the club will hope Cavani proves a much bigger hit than recent No.7s, who also include Memphis Depay, Angel Di Maria and Michael Owen.
Speaking after confirming the signing of Cavani, manager Solskjaer said: “Edinson is an experienced ultimate professional who always gives everything for his team. His goalscoring record for club and country is fantastic and we are delighted to sign a player of his calibre.
“He’ll bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad but, most importantly, he’ll bring goals. He has had a brilliant career so far, winning trophies at almost every club he has played for, and he still has so much more to give at the highest level.
Manchester United are looking to plot their path back to the top. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already brought in Donny van de Beek but Jadon Sancho remains Manchester United’s number one target.
