Now let’s get one thing straight first.
You don’t play for Manchester United for eight years – and potentially now 12 – if you’re not a good player.
Similarly, you don’t win 27 England caps and earn call-ups to the Three Lions’ last two World Cup squads if you’re useless either.
It’s just that, well, Phil Jones often hasn’t helped himself throughout his career at the top level.
You only have to Google the three immortal words ‘Phil Jones face’ to find the wide array of weird and wonderful gurns that the 26-year-old has pulled throughout his time in the United side, and unfortunately for him they often come at the worst possible moments.
But as he, you and pretty much everyone reading this will know, perception is everything in the modern game, and if you’re on the scene of the crime when a goal has just been conceded and you’re pulling a funny face, then you’d better believe that you’re in meme territory.
And so the announcement of Jones’ new Manchester United contract on Friday – an extension of his deal until 2023 – went down exactly as you’d have expected.
First, the man himself though.
“I am delighted to have signed a new contract,” Jones told United’s website .
“Manchester United has been a big part of my life for eight years and I love everything about this club.”
Because the fans, you see, they want a big name summer arrival at centre-back, and have decided on one man and one man alone.
Yep, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly. Whatever the cost.
And so here are some of the entirely rational responses to that Jones announcement.
If only United had seen these first, eh?!
