Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa: Rangnick reaction

Manchester United supporters have called for Cristiano Ronaldo to be given the captain’s armband after the veteran showed tough love to the younger players at the club.

In an explosive interview, the Portuguese international said younger people “do not accept that if you criticise them” and said he would be “number one to help” whenever anyone needed his advice.

“If you don’t want my help and my advice, do your job look at yourself. Do your best to help the team,” Ronaldo said, in a season where United face an uphill battle to secure a top-four finish.

A number of members of the squad have come in for criticism, with results suffering under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and performances not entirely convincing since Ralf Rangnick took over as interim manager.

The forward’s comments have hit home with a number of fans, who have encouraged Rangnick to give Ronaldo the captaincy ahead of current holder Harry Maguire.

Ronaldo pulled no punches in his interview

“Captain’s armband now,” tweeted one fan after the statement, while another said “Pass Ronaldo the captaincy asap, our players need a rude awakening.”

“Why isn’t he the captain?” was the verdict from another, while there was also a suggestion that “If we are to become a big club again you give Ronaldo the captain armband and take the stress off Harry Maguire.”

Maguire has worn the armband since 2020, when former captain Ashley Young left for Inter Milan, and has kept hold of it since the dismissal of former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

England centre-back Maguire had issued a call to arms ahead of United’s FA Cup third round game on Monday night, before the team squeaked into the fourth round with a 1-0 win.

“This team finished second last year and we have a better and bigger squad this year, so we have to show the right attitude,” the captain said.

“We have big players in the team; leaders. I’m sick of repeating myself but it can’t continue like this – we need to go on a proper run, starting Monday.”

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has called on Maguire to focus more on being a mainstay at the club than on serving the team as captain, suggesting David de Gea could be a strong candidate to take the armband.

The thing you can counter that [Maguire criticism] with is that there weren’t many captains at the club – who else are they going to pick?” Ferdinand said.

“David de Gea would have been my choice because of the time he’s been there and he knows what it takes to win.”

United’s next game sees them take on Villa for the second time in a week, as they aim to close the gap to the top four in the Premier League.
