Manchester United may have booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round, but rumours of discontent within the Old Trafford dressing room continue to engulf the club.

Scott McTominay’s early header proved enough against Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa side as United claimed a 1-0 win to go through into the next round of the cup on Monday night.

The win came without star man Cristiano Ronaldo as the Portuguese forward was rested by interim United manager Ralf Rangnick.

The German coach was also sent a timely Sir Alex Ferguson reminder as he prepares to make his first signing at the club.

It also follows reports that United’s dressing room has now split into two camps with Cristiano Ronaldo’s allies emerging.

Here are Mirror Football’s latest Manchester United headlines.

Superstar forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been one of the stand-out performers for Manchester United this season despite the club’s struggles.

But the United No.7 was controversially left out of the squad altogether on Monday night as United hosted Aston Villa in their FA Cup third-round encounter.

The team managed to deal with the absence of their star man perfectly well, however, as they booked their place in the next round of the tournament thanks to Scott McTominay’s goal.

The midfielder glanced home a header from Fred’s cross to put United into the lead after just eight minutes as the Scotland international showed he is a “big game player” for his club.

And his performance echoed praise heaped upon him last year by Old Trafford legend Sir Alex Ferguson – just as Rangnick prepares to bring a new player into the club at his position.
