Manchester United are actively discussing the possibility of pursuing Ruben Amorim as their next manager, according to reports.

The current Sporting Lisbon boss has a growing reputation throughout Europe and is on a shortlist of potential candidates.

Amorim, who won 14 caps for Portugal as a player, is part of the new generation of coaches that have put themselves on the map at a young age.

The Sporting boss is just 36 but has already worked previously with Braga.

At Braga he won the Portuguese Cup within months of taking over, which saw Sporting pay €10m to secure his services – the third highest fee for a manager in history.

With Sporting, Amorim won the Portuguese Cup once again, beating Braga in the final, and has also led them to the league title.

Ruben Amorim has a growing reputation

Those exploits have attracted the attention of those making the key decisions on the red half of Manchester, reports the Telegraph.

Amorim did recently sign an extended deal, which included a hefty buy-out clause, which will no doubt come into consideration.

Mauricio Pochettino is the most speculated of those linked with the Manchester vacancy and had to field questions about a return to England on Tuesday night.

He also has a notable compensation package that will need to be paid should United make a move.

The Argentine is currently in charge at PSG but has enjoyed successful spells at Southampton and Tottenham previously.

However, Parisian chief Leonardo clarified their stance as he told AFP: “I think it’s important to clarify the situation given the amount of false information circulating. Mauricio Pochettino is under contract with the club until 2023.

“We do not want Pochettino to leave. He never asked to leave and no club contacted us in relation to him.”

Pochettino himself said this week: “I said to you all, my contract is until 2023. It’s for one season more. I don’t say anything different. I am very happy at Paris Saint-Germain. It’s a fact. I am happy in Paris.”

Erik ten Hag, the Ajax boss, continues to court attention having led the Dutch side to five wins from five in the Champions League.

His philosophy and ability to improve players is seen as a major plus which has seen him pinpointed as a candidate by the Old Trafford top brass.

Ten Hag is also the pick of Amorim, who advised those in Manchester to appoint the Dutchman.

He said: “If I may, I think Manchester United should sign Ten Hag this week. Now that would be something that would make me quite happy.”

Ten Hag worked with Donny van de Beek previously but had been able to rebuild his squad after leading Ajax to the semi-finals in Europe two years ago.

Ten Hag, alongside with several members of the Ajax staff, such as Marc Overmars, have been linked with roles around Europe.
