Former Arsenal ace Paul Merson has laid into Manchester United for signing veteran forward Edinson Cavani. Ed Woodward spent all summer working on a deal for Jadon Sancho but turned to the Uruguayan in the final days of the window.
Cavani has been a free agent since his Paris Saint-Germain contract expired in August.
The Red Devils had all summer to sort out a move for the 33-year-old but left it until the last minute.
That has raised major questions over Woodward’s negotiating and planning.
Merson is unimpressed with the deadline-day arrival and thinks it could have major implications for how their season pans out.
“Edinson Cavani is an underwhelming signing for Manchester United that shows they are going nowhere,” Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.
“I don’t think they are a top four club at the moment. They can’t defend for toffee, and they let Chris Smalling go to Roma.
“He would probably get in the team right now.
“Cavani feels like a quick fix. But he’s probably not even that if I’m being honest. I don’t see him being the difference.”
