Liverpool’s record 5-0 win at Man Utd: Solskjaer at ‘rock bottom’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that the standard of coaching of Manchester United’s title rivals is not an excuse for the Red Devils poor form.

All three of United’s title rivals in Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea are led by Champions League winning manager’s in Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel respectively.

It is for this reason that it is hardly surprising this trio make up the top three sides in the Premier League table – Chelsea leading the way followed by Liverpool and City on 22, 21 and 20 points each.

United however, are already lagging some way behind their title rivals – Solskjaer’s side languishing as low as seventh on 14 points – eight points adrift of table-toppers Chelsea.

The Red Devils had the chance to make some ground and send a statement with their fixture against Liverpool – but instead suffered their worst ever home defeat to the Reds, a 5-0 mauling at Old Trafford.

Klopp is aiming to secure Liverpool’s second league title in three seasons as well as building on his Champions League glory of 2019 while Guardiola will be confident of winning his fourth Premier League since he arrived in 2016.

Tuchel enjoyed an electric start to life at Stamford Bridge – winning the Champions League just five months into his reign.

All three of European football’s best bosses were touted with the Man Utd job at one time, but the Old Trafford hierarchy failed in their attempts to entice Klopp and Guardiola – before making no attempt to lure Tuchel.

The club opted to reward Solskjaer for last season’s second-placed finish and hand the Norwegian a three-year contract extension in July.

Since then, United’s form has been particularly underwhelming – sparking question marks over whether Solskjaer’s extension was the right decision from the board.

United’s slump is undeniably a cause for concern – the expensively-assembled outfit have lost five of their last nine in all competitions while losing three of the last four league outings.

In that time United have played at home on three occasions, but have shipped eleven goals against Aston Villa, Everton, Leicester City and Liverpool.

As the level of scrutiny surrounding Solskjaer intensifies, the United boss insists the level of his coaching competition is not an excuse.

“No, the time is now,” Solskjaer explained. “And Manchester United has had tough times, difficult times before, and we’ve always bounced back and taken on challenges.

“Last season, yep, we’re second, this season we’ve started badly, we’ve hit a brick wall and you’ve got to get through that one.

“Start building the performances, start building results, start with a clean sheet and see where that takes us to the end of the season.”
