Manchester United’s Daniel James has had a storming start to the season – and the secret could be his lucky haircuts.
Footballers are known for their pre-match superstitions, and James is no different – regularly making a 400-mile round trip to see the only man he trusts with his barnet.
That man is Rhys Bell at the Stay Fresh studio in Swansea, where James played for five years before joining United for £15million in the summer.
Whether or not it’s the haircuts, something is definitely working for the Wales winger, who has hit three goals in five games for United so far this season, as well as curling one in for Wales against Belarus during the international break.
The 21-year-old is racing to be fit to face West Ham today following an ankle injury – and if he does play he’ll be hoping his trim keeps him a cut above the rest.
“Dan doesn’t trust anyone else with his hair and tries to see Rhys whenever he can before games,” said a pal to the Daily Star .
“He likes to get a lucky haircut and so far the trims are working a treat.
“It’s a fair old distance to travel for a haircut but Daniel reckons it is worth it.”
Bell – who describes himself as an exclusive barber on his Instagram which has nearly 5,000 followers – says it is no surprise James heads back to Wales to have his locks chopped.
He said: “We’ve become good friends and he only trusts me because I’m the best in Swansea – and, yeah, the north-west too, it seems.
“He still comes down but I’ll go up to meet him sometimes too.”
James picked up his ankle injury during the win over Leicester last weekend and is rated 50-50 to make the team for today’s game away to the Hammers.
Luke Shaw has been ruled out after failing to recover from a hamstring injury in time, while Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial are also doubtful with knocks.
