An artist has created the world’s most expensive Christmas jumper, now being sold for £30,000.

Aidan Liban, 33, created the jumper to raise money for the NHS, spending his life savings in the process.

It is diamond-encrusted and cost him £7,000 to make.

He created a reindeer design using diamond-encrusted silver stars, 24 carat gold thread, Italian silk lining, and thousands of Swarovski crystals. Liban was hoping the creation would invert the trope of the ‘ugly Christmas jumper’.

Liban has now achieved the world record for the world’s most expensive Christmas jumper, beating out the previous record holder of £24,000, which was made by Tipsy Elves back in 2016 and was covered in 24,274 crystals.

Liban said the idea for the jumper came to him during lockdown 2020, when he was living alone in Fulham, London, and working part-time as a key worker at a charity.

He spent over 3,000 hours on the project and hopes to sell the jumper, donating a portion of the money to the NHS.

‘I had the vision and I made it come true. I wanted to create something magnificent and eye-catching – which I have done,’ Liban said.

The project began in December 2020. After spending a lot of time sourcing the right materials for the jumper, Liban had to rush to finish it in time for the 2021 festive season.

He completed the design last month, as he ‘only had time to work on it in the evenings and on weekends.’

‘The time it’s taken me is the main factor in the price tag, as it’s so delicate,’ said the artist. ‘Christmas jumpers were never really in my family tradition, so I thought I’d do it in style.’

However, Liban warned that whoever does buy the jumper won’t be able to wash the jumper if they do wear it as it is ‘delicate’.

He ordered 24-carat silk from a specialist French boutique, costing him £200, while the Swarovski crystals cost around £1,000 and the silk lining was £200 alone. The 150 diamonds, which are near the collar of the jumper, were bought from a specialist in Hatton Garden and cost £5,000.

Liban said: ‘No expense has been spared at all. I’ve done pretty much all it myself aside from a few very delicate bits.

‘The main body of the jumper is made from wool and cotton. It’s lined with gorgeous silk, it’s soft like a kitten.’

‘The diamonds have small imperfections, meaning they wouldn’t suit jewelry but are perfect for the jumper,’ he said, adding that ‘it took quite a while to source the perfect ones.’

According to Liban, the jumper is telling a story: if you look closely, the reindeer even has a Swarovski gold locket around its neck.

‘It’s a fun novelty piece,’ he added. ‘It’s very rare that something of this quality is made, it’s very exciting.

‘I want it to wow people and break up the doom and gloom we’ve been hearing about for the past few years.’

Liban didn’t just want strangers to be wowed by the piece, which many of us surely are, but also his friends and family.

He said: ‘I kept it a secret from most of my friends and family, they were enthralled when I did the big reveal.’

Liban is serious about selling the jumper – it’s available on his website for anyone who wants to buy it.
