Man makes Halloween decorations so gory neighbours call the police

A Dallas man has put up Halloween decorations so extreme, one of his neighbours called the police.

Artist Steven Novak put his creative skills to the test by creating a horrifying Halloween scene, complete with buckets of fake blood, fake dead and undead bodies posed in violent tableaus, and a wheelbarrow full of plastic but very realistic limbs.

The zombie-themed decorations depict scenes including a body with a machete through its head, posed as if it had pushed a safe onto the head of another body.

There’s also a humanoid figure posed inside a black plastic bin liner, a figure with a bench leg in its head, another with a chainsaw coming out of its back, and something that looks very much like a zombie posed as if it’s crawling over a hedge.

As if that wasn’t enough to be getting on with, Steven has a projector set up to make it seem as though hordes of the undead are gathering inside at the window, about to get out.

These spooky seasonal decorations were apparently intense enough to make one of his neighbours call the police.

Steven tells us: ‘I make art outside a lot so my neighbours told me I should do a Halloween display about six years ago. It started with ghosts, lights, and fog machines.

‘The kids coming over told me I should put out dead bodies. So I did. Each year the kids and neighbors give me ideas to scale it up each year.’

As for what goes into making a display like the one on his house now, he says: ‘The whole thing this year probably costs well over a thousand dollars if it was from scratch.

‘The blood is a big expense because I have to re-apply it every time it rains.’

He adds that even the police officers called to investigate were impressed by the decorations.

He says: ‘The police call came from an angry neighbour that complains about everything.

‘All the other neighbours think it’s great. Even the cops that answered the call thought it was cool.

‘In fact, lots of patrol cars stop by just to check it out. One officer yesterday got out and was doing a Facebook live cast which I was a part of.’

As for next year?

‘Because of the recent media attention,’ Steven says, ‘I plan on really scaling it up next year complete with a wood chipper.’

Something to look forward to then!
