Man City news: Bernardo Silva opens up on Kevin De Bruyne injury

City’s attacking midfield trio of Silva, his namesake David and Ilkay Gundogan ensured De Bruyne was not missed in the 6-1 demolition of Huddersfield at the Etihad yesterday.

And Silva also pointed to the creative quality on the bench – record buy Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, Leory Sane and Phil Foden – to underline City’s strength in depth.

The Portugal international said: “It is a fantastic squad. Even with Kevin injured we still have a lot of options – the players on the bench today were some of the best players in the Premier League.

“We know the squad we have and everyone has to work hard to have the place in the team. That’s good because it keeps everyone entertained and everyone knows how hard he has to work to play.

“Obviously Kevin is one of the most important players for our team. Last season he was, if not the best player in the Premier League, one of the best.

“He is a fantastic player, one of the best midfielders in the world.

“It’s kind of a blow for us but we have other options as well. It means opportunities are opening for other players and that is good as well.”

Silva has staked a strong case to remain a regular with impressive performances in ‘s opening two Premier League wins over Arsenal and the Terriers.

“I’m happy I’m helping the team,” he added. “And I’m working as hard as I can to have my place and play as many minutes as I can and help the team get as many wins as we can.

“I think it was a great game for us. We started very well, pressing high, trying to score goals, trying to put as much pressure as we could on the Huddersfield defence. Happily we scored three goals in the first half and in the end we won 6-1.

“It was an amazing performance by everyone. We didn’t concede much space.

“Unfortunately they scored from a throw in that we could have defended better, but in the end it was a good performance and we are very happy with it.

“We were not happy to concede but we knew how good we were playing and how well we played in the first half.

“We wanted to do the same in the second half. That is what we did and we are happy with the three points.”

Sergio Aguero led the rout with his 13th hat-trick for City but Silva says he has come to expect that quality from the Argentina international.

“It was another fantastic performance,” he said. “Once again he proved how good he is and it is a privilege to have him with us and be able to count on so many goals every season.”
