Madonna thinks popstars need to cause controversy to have a career nowadays

Madonna has shared her thoughts on how different the benchmarks of controversy are for popstars these days – claiming they have to be outrageous as the norm nowadays.

The Papa Don’t Preach star, 62, was known throughout her career for pushing the boundaries, but she thinks her antics – including flashing her bum at the 1984 MTV VMAs -are pretty tame by modern standards.

Madonna said on Instagram: ‘People got so upset with the things I did, from my Like A Prayer video to my skirt accidentally flying off on the first MTV Awards and my butt cheek being exposed.

‘I mean, can you imagine that now? You have to have your butt exposed if you want a career right now.’

Madonna, who is currently working on a screenplay for a movie about her life, says only she can tell her own life story.

She explained: ‘So many people tried to make this movie and I threatened to bomb their homes. Of course I was kidding. I would never do such a thing. Who can tell my story besides me? It’s just b***.’

Madge has been sharing pictures and videos from behind the scenes of the writing process throughout the past few months as she prepares her upcoming biopic.

She has paired up with Oscar-winner Diablo Cody to write the script, which is set to follow in the footsteps of Elton John’s Rocketman and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

Diablo’s screenwriting debut was 2007’s Juno, which earned her an Oscar for best original screenplay as well as many other awards.

The singer’s biopic is sure to be a must-see, as her life story and almost 40-year career in the spotlight has been pretty epic.

She’s never been scared to be controversial herself, from releasing her album Erotica with a coffee table book called Sex, to still whipping her bum out on red carpets as recently as the Met Gala 2016.

The headline-grabbing moments can’t detract from her enormous success as a solo star, with 14 studio albums under her belt as well as a whole heap of awards, including seven Grammys.

We can’t wait to see what she’s been cooking up for the biopic.
