Lyon and Brazil star Bruno Guimaraes says rumours linking him with a move to Arsenal are ‘normal’ given the outstanding year he’s had at both club and international level.

Arsenal were heavily linked with Guimaraes across the summer transfer window last year and the north London giants continue to be credited with an interest in the 24-year-old, with Mikel Arteta keen to bolster his midfield this January.

Guimaraes played a key role as Brazil retained their Olympic gold medal last August and the highly-rated defensive midfielder picked up where he left off in an impressive start to the Ligue 1 campaign, starting 18 of Lyon’s 19 matches this season.

The Gunners know they are likely to come up against strong competition should they step up their bid to sign Guimaraes this winter, with Newcastle, Everton and Roma also eyeing the ex-Athletico Paranaense man.

However, speaking to Globo Esporte, the Brazil international brushed off the speculation surrounding his future, while stressing that seeing out a successful season at Lyon remained his main ‘objective’.

‘It’s normal, even more in the window period,’ he responded when pressed on talk of a possible move to Arsenal or Roma.

‘When you’re an Olympic champion, you have a good season individually, you’re called up to the national team… it’s normal things in football.

‘I don’t even like to think too much. I leave it more to my agents, for them to solve.

‘My objective is to take Lyon to the place where they deserve. We’re in the round of 16 of the Europa League, it’s a title that Lyon don’t have. Let’s fight hard to try to conquer it.’

Guimaraes is tied into a contract at Lyon until 2024 and discussions have taken place regarding a possible renewal at the Groupama Stadium.

But the midfielder is only concerned about matters on the pitch for the time being considering the ‘difficult games’ on the horizon for Lyon.

‘The club is going through a moment of change with the board,’ he added.

‘I had a conversation when Juninho was the director, something very fast.

‘At the right time, we will talk, settle down.

‘But at the moment, the full focus is on moving Lyon up the table. We have difficult games ahead.’

Speaking at a press conference last week, Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta confirmed the club would be ‘looking for options’ in midfield this January.

‘We are very, very short at the moment,’ the Spaniard told reporters.

‘We are going to move and look for options because we are very short there.’
