Luis Suarez comments on Liverpool as rumours of Anfield return emerge

Luis Suarez has been linked with a sensational return to Liverpool.

It’s not the first time it has happened following the Uruguay international’s Anfield exit all the way back in 2014, and until Suarez calls it a day, it won’t be the last.

The fresh reports from Spain suggest that Suarez is unhappy at Atletico Madrid, despite being the club’s top goalscorer in La Liga and on course to win the title this season.

It is claimed the 34-year-old has become frustrated with manager Diego Simeone’s tactics and is considering his options ahead of the summer transfer window.

Suarez has just one year remaining on his current contract, which he signed last summer after Barcelona released him on a free.

But Suarez has previously discussed the prospect of returning to Liverpool before hanging up his boots, which suggests he’d certainly be keen on a return if Jurgen Klopp and co. are on board.

“You never know in football what the future holds but if I ever play in England again I will play for the Liverpool team and not another team,” said Suarez after an all-star charity match at Anfield in 2015.

“It’s great to come back to Anfield. Not just for the old players coming back but those who play now and for the supporters, for Stevie and the foundation – it was a special game.

“I’ve missed the fans. The atmosphere is unbelievable, it’s amazing. Everyone who’s played for Liverpool knows how important the supporters are. They know they are in my heart.”

Suarez also previously revealed his disappointment in not being able to win the Premier League title with Liverpool in his final campaign before signing for Barcelona.

“In the last year when I played there at Anfield, I was so sad for the supporters [that we missed out on the title],” said Suarez in 2020.

“I know some Liverpool supporters were angry with me because I celebrated a goal against Liverpool here in Camp Nou [last season] and for that, I am so sad.

“I accept that and I say that hopefully, they understand my situation: we were playing at home and in the Champions League semi-final.

“I lived one of the best moments of my life there and I think the supporters didn’t forget how my attitude was in the Liverpool shirt. Now hopefully they are so happy with the Premier League trophy this year.”
