Amber Gill has revealed how the trolling she received for putting on weight in lockdown began to impact her mental health, ultimately pushing her to embark on a fitness regime which is now inspiring her 2.7 million followers.

The Love Island star was hailed a hero for sharing an Instagram post in September where she opened up about the nasty comments she’d received on TikTok for gaining a stone during the coronavirus pandemic.

For Amber’s legion of followers, it was shocking to hear the pint-sized reality star had been picked apart for putting on a few pounds which, frankly, most of us have done since March.

The trolling did start to have an effect on Amber’s mental health but gave her the ammo to launch her new fitness platform, Amber Flexx, which will help others follow the six-week plan that got herself into shape.

Explaining the impact the trolling had one her, Amber told Metro.co.uk: ‘I think the impact that it had on me was what made me come to the crossroads where I just wanted to start training because I just wasn’t myself.

‘Usually I’m quite a happy, positive person and I was just not really productive, not motivated or wanting to speak on my Instagram stories.

‘It definitely did have an impact [on my mental health] and I think that’s what spurred me on to actually start exercising, not necessarily the weight but how I was feeling within myself.’

Amber, 23, didn’t have any kind of eating plan during the first lockdown and ordered pizzas and other takeaway foods whenever she was ‘bored’ as there was no structure to her days.

‘It was just one of those things in lockdown that was the only entertainment I could get,’ she admitted.

The TikTok trolling was so bad that Amber deleted the offensive remarks in shock that she was being bombarded in the middle of a global health crisis.

She said: ‘I was like I actually can’t believe people are saying this with the year that everyone’s having. I just think that it’s such an inappropriate thing to comment on.

‘As long as I’m alive and healthy and my friends and family are healthy, that should be the most important thing at that point in the year. Not whether I had put on weight or not which is why I ended up making that Instagram post about it because I was just a bit shocked that people would say things like that.

‘It made us feel better that I saw a lot of girls in the comments relating to putting on weight in lockdown and not feeling guilty about it so it was great to resonate with a lot of people.’

Amber won Love Island in 2019 after winning over audiences with her sparky personality and – eventually short-lived – love story with Greg O’Shea.

Since then, she’s become one of the most-followed Love Island alumni with over 2.7 million followers.

With that amount of attention comes scrutiny that Amber admits she didn’t fully understand until it happened.

‘I don’t think that’s anything they can prepare you for, they can tell you about it and do everything possible but you can’t really understand what it’s like until you’re living it,’ she explained.

Love Island will return this summer following a break in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Amber’s advice for the newbies?

‘Don’t let your soul get sucked into social media. Always talk to your friends and family and keep in touch with them people that know and love you.

‘Don’t get sucked into the fakeness that social media can be.’

Amber Gill’s 6 Week Blast plan, including diet and workouts, is available online at Amber Flexx priced at £39.99 from January 4.
