Lorraine Kelly hails BAFTA Scotland winner Lawrence Chaney and demands Chaney chat show

Lorraine Kelly has hailed winner Lawrence Chaney as ‘this generation’s Stanley Baxter who needs a chat show’ at the BAFTA Scotland ceremony.

The Scots telly queen also reckons Lawrence is a force of nature and admitted ‘I couldn’t take my eyes off Lawrence.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner Lawrence won the Scottish Audience Award at the annual event after making the shortlist alongside other nominees David Carlyle (It’s A Sin), Martin Compston (Line of Duty), Jean Johansson (A Place in the Sun), Kelly Macdonald (Line of Duty) and David Tennant (Des).

In a speech ahead of the reveal of the winner, Lorraine told invited guests at BBC Scotland for the ceremony: “Well how do I describe Lawrence Chaney? A force of nature obviously, hugely talented and extremely funny but so kind hearted and very very rude and naughty I have to say.

She added: ‘When I appeared as a judge on Drag Race I just couldn’t take my eyes off Lawrence. There’s obviously real charisma but also Lawrence’s vulnerability and a big heart.

Lawrence has been on my show and brought huge energy and fun to the set and is up for anything charming and hilarious.

“Lawrence is my favourite Scot on screen because they are the a full package and I think this is just the beginning.

“There needs to be a Chaney chat show and game shows and big overblown TV specials with sumptuous costumes and sketches and razor sharp jokes and all of that.

” I think Lawrence is this generation’s Stanley Baxter and we’ve been waiting a long time for the next Scottish global superstar. Lawrence is the real deal.”

Lawrence who was taken aback when they won said: “Oh my god I cannot believe I’m winning this award tonight. It’s so surreal.”

They added: “I’m nominated against people I’ve looked up to for so long. It truly means the world to me. I look kind of like big bird just now. I appreciate all the support.

“Thanks to anyone, all the fans. Thanks to anyone for believing in me who hated on me at school cause now I’ve the confidence to do this as a full time job entertaining people all around the world.

Lawrence continued “I need to thank my mum, my parents, my family and BBC, Three World of Wonder. I need to thank Randy, Fenton, Matt, Bruce Ruby, Erin and of course RuPaul Charles for changing my life and whats really funny is before when I used to do gigs people didn’t know how to pronounce my name.

They’d say Chorence Laney or Larry Chancey. All because RuPaul said Lawrence Chaney I now have people in supermarkets and Tesco shouting my name at me. It’s very inconvenient. Thanks for voting and supporting me.”
