Hundreds of thousands of young people all over the country nervously collected their A-level results today.

But pupils at Brampton Manor Academy in East Ham, London, will have felt some extra pressure to live up to the impressive reputation the school has earned itself in recent years.

The state school, where more than half of pupils qualify for free school meals, sent 51 pupils to Oxbridge in 2020 and 55 in 2021 – more than Eton.

Somehow this year’s sixth formers have done even better, with a staggering 85 of them securing places at Oxford and Cambridge.

A whopping 185 A-level students received three or four A*s on their A-levels today.

One of these pupils, Dominykas Antanaitis, used to stay at school until 6pm every day, because there was no space for him to study at home.

The first member of his family to go to university, Dominykas is headed to Cambridge to study engineering with three A*s.

He said: ‘My heart stopped when I opened the email; it took me some time to realise I had actually got in.

‘I called my mum straight away and she was ecstatic. I am so happy my hard work has paid off.’

Priscilla Nazziwa is also the first person in her family to go to university. She has been offered a place to study archaeology & anthropology at Oxford.

She had not even heard of the subjects until she went to a university taster session in Year 12.

She said: ‘My parents were overjoyed and emotional. The news spread around my family very fast!’

Gabriel, who has an offer from Cambridge, did not expect such success as he only started learning to speak Engligh at the age of 10, when he moved to the UK.

He said: ‘Holding an offer from Cambridge has genuinely made me believe that you can achieve anything you put your mind to as long as you persevere.’

He achieved three A*s.

Executive principal Dr Dayo Olukoshi OBE said: ‘We are exceptionally proud of what our students have achieved. They have shown incredible resilience and determination to ensure the disruption experienced over the past couple of years has not halted their path to success.

‘We passionately believe there is no limit to what our students can achieve with sufficient effort and determination, and I am not at all surprised that two of the world’s best universities have recognised their talent by offering them places.’
