If your heart sinks when your hairdresser utters the immortal words: ‘been anywhere nice this year?’, then you’ll be pleased to hear that East London-based hairdressers Not Another Salon has launched a ‘silent’ haircut offering.
That’s right, no longer will you have to bury your head into a magazine to try and stave off small talk or wait patiently for the conversation to tail off, because these guys just want you to have some time to yourself.
Owner Sophie Hilton explains her decision to introduce the treatment at the salon on Brick Lane: “In order for us to be a true non judgment company we need to consider all our clients needs. With mental health issues on the rise, feeling comfortable to say when you need time out couldn’t be more important.”
All you have to do is utter the word ‘silent’ when booking your cut or colour and your stylist will be advised to keep schtum for the duration of your treatment. Well almost, it’s not completely silent – that would be weird – they’ll talk you through your consultation and anything else related to the service, but the rest will be pure you time.
This may well be the sign of a new silent self-care movement in the capital, as earlier this month Treatwell announced it would be offering “mindfulness manis” at over 100 salons in London throughout the month of October to encourage customers to switch off and indulge in some well earned me-time after finding 89 per cent of people in survey reported not using headphones during a manicure for fear of coming across rude, while 33 per cent of people said they relax for less than 30 minutes a day.
Let this be a reminder to switch off and relax, especially when enjoying a spot of pampering.
