London coronavirus cases rose in two-thirds of boroughs over Christmas


The number of Covid patients in London hospitals hit a seven-day average of 21,779 on Christmas Day, beating the first wave peak of 21,195 on April 12.

Across the capital, the number of new cases per 100,000 population rose to a record of 902.5, up from 817 a week ago, which is well over double the average for England, which is 400 per 100,000.

Seven boroughs saw major rises of over 25 per cent in the weekly tally of new cases.  Brent saw 2,834 cases in a week, up by 32 per cent, while Ealing, Barnett, Sutton and Newham suffered rises of 27 per cent. Harrow’s cases rose 25 per cent and Hounslow’s by 26 per cent.

Hardest hit for its size is Barking & Dagenham, with 2,764 new cases in a week, and the highest rate of new cases in London at 1,298 per 100,000 population.

Redbridge had 3,926 cases in a week, with a rate per 100,000 of 1,286.  Seven other boroughs also recorded rates of over 1,000 per 100,000 population, Newham (1205), Enfield (1,155), Havering (1,122), Bexley (1,101), Tower Hamlets (1,064) Waltham Forest (1,008) and Bromley (1,001).

Seven boroughs saw decreases in the weekly tally: Bexley, Hackney (which includes the City of London), Havering, Islington, Lambeth, Wandsworth and Hammersmith & Fulham.  Havering recorded the biggest fall, down 16 per cent, but its rise of 2,912 cases in a week was still one of the highest.

London’s second wave, which was accelerated by the new variant of the virus, is rising more slowly than it did during the run-up to Christmas. The most recent data showed a 10 per cent rise in the week to December 30, compared with a near doubling in the week to December 20.

On January 3 there were 81 deaths in London of people who died within 28 days of a positive test for Covid-19, pushing up the capital’s death toll to at least 8,692.  Over the past seven days, some 463 fatalities were recorded.

Here are the new cases tally for every London borough in the most recent full week for which complete data is available, ending December 29.

Barking and Dagenham:   2,764 (up 13.5%). Cases per 100,000 population: 1,298 (up from 1,143 in previous week).

Barnet:  3,694 (up 27%).  Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 933 (up from 735 in a week).

Bexley:  2,733 (down 4.2%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 1,100 (down from 1,149 in a week).

Brent:  2,834 (up 32%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 859 (up from 651 in a week).

Bromley: 3,327 (up 10%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 1,001 (up from 907 in a week).

Camden: 1,630 (up 16%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 603 (up from 520 in a week).

Croydon:  3,465 (up 11%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 896.

Ealing:  2,677 (up 27%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 783.

Enfield:  3,854 (up 19%).  Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 1,154.

Greenwich: 2,659 (up 19%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days:  826.

Hackney and City of London:  2,403 (down 2.8%). Cases per 100,000 population: x (up from x in a week).

Hammersmith and Fulham:  1,176 (down by 3.1%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 635.

Haringey:  2,581 (up by 14%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 961.

Harrow:   2,230 (up by 25%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 888.

Havering:  2,912 (down by 16.2%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 1,122

Hillingdon:  2,703 (up by 21%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 880

Hounslow:  2,459, (up by 26%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 905).

Islington:  1,670, (down by 0.9%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 689

Kensington and Chelsea:  872, (up by 6.3%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 558.

Kingston upon Thames:  1,278 (up 15%).  Cases per 100,000 population: 720.

Lambeth:  2,504 (down by 3.5%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 768.

Lewisham:  2,634, (up by 19%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 861

Merton:  1,930, (up by 13.5%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 934

Newham:  4,257, (up by 27%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 1,205

Redbridge:  3,926, (up by 8.2%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 1,286

Richmond upon Thames:  1,265, (up by 7.4%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 639

Southwark:  2,524, (up by 2.1%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 792

Sutton:  1,957, (up by 27%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 948.

Tower Hamlets:  3,454, (up by 3.4%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 1,063.

Waltham Forest:  2,791, (up by 1.4%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 1,008

Wandsworth:  2,374, (down by 9.5%). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 720.

Westminster:  1,354, (no change). Cases per 100,000 population over seven days: 515
