Curtis Jones has been receiving praise from all angles after another fine performance on Tuesday night in Liverpool’s 5-1 win at Porto in the Champions League.

The 20-year-old didn’t get on the scoresheet in the rousing victory, but he was an attacking threat from midfield and – depending on your definition of an assist – laid on four of the five goals for his teammates.

This comes after scoring his first Premier League goal of the season, a cracking effort in the 3-3 draw with Brentford at the weekend, and he is clearly growing in stature in the Reds squad and starting XI.

Jurgen Klopp had plenty of kind words for the Liverpool academy talent after the win in Portugal, but was careful not to go over the top and encourage Jones to keep working.

‘Curtis played a good game,’ said Klopp. He had some problems a little bit with the stomach before the game; they told me I need to keep an eye on him but I told him after the game whatever it is, keep it because it was really a good game.

‘He played a really good game, he was everywhere, he was involved in everything. Set up the first goal with a surprising finish, goalie cannot save it. In a lot of other situations he was really there – maybe not as spectacular as the offensive stuff, but defensively he played a top-class game.

‘He defended really well, pressed from the blind side, a lot of things I liked a lot about his performance tonight. So, let’s keep going, Curtis, it was not bad tonight.’

Former Reds striker Michael Owen was in the BT Sport studio watching the match and was not quite so fulsome in his praise, but was impressed with his performance, which he would like to see Jones repeat going forward.

‘Before Harvey Elliott got injured, he was the one with the shirt,’ Owen reminded viewers. ‘Curtis Jones has always been around, here and there, but for his sake he needs a long run in the team. When he gets the chance he needs to do what he did tonight.’

More generous with his plaudits was Reds captain Jordan Henderson who has tipped his young teammate to go all the way to the top of the game.

‘He has been fantastic – he’s settled really well and he’s matured really well,’ said the England midfielder. ‘He’s had to be patient but he’s come in and done fantastically well. He has all the attributes to be a top player.’

The big games keep coming for Liverpool as they take on Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon and Jones will hope he has earned the trust of his manager enough to be let loose against the Premier League champions.
