The Premier League season gets underway on Friday night at Anfield as Liverpool host Norwich.

The Champions League winners welcome the Championship winners back to the top flight and will hand them an extremely stern test in their first match back.

Jurgen Klopp has had a quiet transfer window, only signing Sepp van den Berg, Adrian and Harvey Elliott, so it will be much the same Liverpool squad that came second last season and triumphed in Europe.

What has Jurgen Klopp said?

‘As the team, we know we have the opportunity to be better than we were last season,’ Klopp wrote in the matchday programme. ‘This I love about football. Regardless of what came before you know there are new challenges and new memories to make.

‘This team, since I have been fortunate enough to lead them, has been all about progression collectively and individually. They know standing still means you actually fall backwards. The Premier League, the domestic cups and Europe – all our opponents will make strides forward. Our strides can and must be bigger if we want to achieve.

‘I hear the words often, after a season like we just had, about how difficult or how important it is to “go again”. I don’t dislike the sentiment and there is merit to it, but simply “going again” won’t be enough. We need to be even stronger, even fitter, smarter, more committed, greater focus.

‘Maybe a slight change on the sentiment: “improve again”, maybe “progress again.”‘

What has Daniel Farke said?

‘We are returning to the top flight so we are all happy. We know it’s a tough first task away at Anfield. We are working so hard. We’re looking forward to the game.

‘I can’t speak highly enough of Jurgen Klopp. He always delivers. He was top class at Mainz and then at Borussia Dortmund. The job he has done at Liverpool is outstanding.

‘We were under lots of financial pressure in the past. We have a situation now where we can keep our best players. The most important focus during this window was to keep our group. We are confident that we’re in good shape.’
