Jurgen Klopp’s side did struggle with injuries, particularly at the back, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Diogo Jota, Jordan Henderson and Joel Matip all missing a number of games.
Liverpool have moved to address their lack of depth in defence, having completed their first transfer of the summer on Friday.
Georginio Wijnaldum’s departure has also been announced, with the Dutch international’s contract officially coming to an end at the end of next month.
Wijnaldum is unlikely to be the only player to leave, with several fringe players also expected to be sold.

Ibrahim Konate completes move
Liverpool have officially completed the signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, announcing that the 22-year-old had signed a long-term contract with the club on Friday.
The Reds forked out £36m to trigger his release clause and Konate told the club’s official website after joining: “I’m really happy to be joining such a massive club like Liverpool.
“It’s a really exciting moment for me and my family and I am really looking forward to meeting my new teammates, the staff and getting started on this new chapter.
“Right now, my focus is on the U21 European Championships with France, but after this competition I know I will be joining one of the best teams in the world and that gives me a great feeling.
“I have worked very hard for many years to get to this point, but I would like to say a big thank you to everyone at RB Leipzig and all the people I worked with there – the coaches, my teammates, the staff and especially the fans.
“Your support helped me grow up during my time there and become not only a better player, but a better man and I will always be grateful for it.”
Liverpool set Divock Origi asking price
Having now made their first major signing of the summer, the Athletic are reporting that any further signings will be affected by how much cash they can generate from player sales.
One of the players who is up for sale this summer is Divock Origi, who made just nine Premier League appearances this season.
The forward is now 26 and, having missed out on a spot in Belgium’s squad for the Euros, the time is right for him to move on, with Liverpool said to value Origi at around £20m.
Calhanoglu linked with Anfield switch
Hakan Calhanoglu’s current contract with AC Milan is due to expire at the end of June and, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, the Turkish international is set to leave.
The report states that the player’s entourage has ‘had contact with Liverpool’, but the Reds have ‘not yet made a formal offer’.
Calhanoglu has impressed at the San Siro this season, netting nine goals and providing 12 assists in 43 appearances in all competitions.
