Jurgen Klopp previews Crystal Palace clash

Jurgen Klopp must decide who will partner Virgil van Dijk at centre-back as Liverpool look to extend their fine start to the season against Crystal Palace.

The Eagles travel to Anfield on Saturday afternoon, three days after the Reds beat AC Milan 3-2 in the Champions League on yet another memorable European night.

Joe Gomez was handed his first start of the season for the visit of the Italian giants, but Klopp may choose his trusted duo of Van Dijk and Joel Matip against Palace.

The Cameroonian has played 90 minutes in all five of Liverpool’s games this season and his calm reading of the game and adventurous forward runs have caught the eye.

Matip has struggled with injuries in recent years so Klopp will be loath to overburden the 30-year-old, especially as Ibrahima Konate is waiting in the wings to make his debut after arriving for £35million this summer.

Centre-back certainly presents the biggest dilemma for Klopp as he selects his line-up to face Patrick Vieira’s side, as much of the rest of his team picks itself.

No.1 Alisson is sure to start in goal, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson at right-back and left-back respectively.

Both full-backs were brilliant going forward against Milan, with Alexander-Arnold forcing an own-goal for the opener and Robertson winning a penalty after his shot was handled.

Brazilian lynchpin Fabinho appears likely to start at the base of midfield and could be flanked by Jordan Henderson and Thiago.

With Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi unavailable to face Palace through a hamstring injury and cramp respectively, Klopp’s options in attack are limited. As such, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are likely to line up either side of Diogo Jota.

Providing an update on Firmino during his press conference on Friday, Klopp said: “He’s not ready. Bobby didn’t even start training with the team.

“It will happen at some point next week, he will be back in training and then we will see.”

Klopp hopes the Brazilian forward will return to training next week, when Liverpool travel to Norwich City in the Carabao Cup third round and Brentford in the Premier League.

Diogo Jota is poised to lead the line in the absence of Roberto Firmino

Harvey Elliott and Neco Williams remain unavailable for selection.

Elliott suffered a dislocated ankle during the 3-0 victory at Leeds United last Sunday and underwent successful surgery earlier this week.

Williams, meanwhile, withdrew from the Wales squad for the international break earlier this month due to a foot injury.

Liverpool predicted line-up: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; Salah, Jota, Mane.
