Liverpool player ratings: Newcastle frustrate defending Premier League champions in draw

In the final Premier League game of 2020, Liverpool made the trip to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United and the reigning champions were held to a 0-0 draw. Steve Bruce’s side battled well and had some early success but they were unable to make count. Goalkeeper Karl Darlow made a couple of fine saves, before Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane missed some excellent chances to put Liverpool ahead in the second-half. The game ended in a stalemate, with Jurgen Klopp’s side extending their lead at the top of the table to three points.

Liverpool player ratings vs Newcastle United:

Allison – 6

A relatively quiet night for the goalkeeper, who banked his fourth Premier League clean sheet of the season. Forced into one really good save to deny Ciaran Clark in the second-half.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 6

His trademark dangerous delivery was on show, while he dealt well with the threat Newcastle posed down their left-hand side.

Nathaniel Phillips – 5

Preferred over Rhys Williams with Joel Matip out with an adductor problem, Phillips struggled to deal with the threat of Callum Wilson in the first-half.

Fabinho – 7

The holding midfielder continued his excellent form as a makeshift centre-back and was a real leader in the heart of defence.

James Milner – 6

The veteran midfielder came back into the starting line-up after recovering from a hamstring problem and he put in a typically industrious display.

Mohamed Salah – 5

Denied in the first-half by an excellent save from Karl Darlow. Largely starved of possession but squandered a gilt-edged chance in the second-half.

Roberto Firmino – 6

Also denied by Darlow in the first-half, who made a smart save from a header. Sent Salah through in the second with a good ball but the Egyptian fluffed his lines. Missed an excellent chance of his own moments later.

Sadio Mane – 6

Had some opportunities in the first-half but his final ball was poor. Looked set to score a simple tap-in in the second-half but was denied by some last-ditch defending from Fabian Schar.
