Joe Cole thinks Chelsea would prefer to face Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League rather than Liverpool.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea booked their spot in the final four of Europe’s premier competition on Tuesday night despite losing 1-0 to Porto.

A remarkable overhead kick from Mehdi Taremi in the final minutes of the match wasn’t enough to overturn a two-goal deficit for the Portuguese side, with Chelsea advancing to the semi-finals.

Either Real Madrid or Liverpool will await them in the semi-finals, with Zinedine Zidane’s side currently holding a 3-1 lead over the Premier League outfit heading into Wednesday’s second leg.

And Cole, the former Chelsea and Liverpool winger, thinks Tuchel and co. will be hoping for Real Madrid to hang on to that lead.

‘It’s been a long time coming for Chelsea,’ Cole told BT Sport after the match.

‘It was business like this evening. Tuchel picked a team to get the job done.

‘I thought Kante was the bright spark, I thought he held it together in there. They just left it too late, Porto.

‘The goal was outstanding but it was the only thing that kept us awake, it was quite poor. Standard-wise it wasn’t good.

‘Chelsea, very happy. Business-like performance and you’d take Real Madrid in the semi-finals over Liverpool. I think Real Madrid have fallen a long way.’

Glenn Hoddle, the former Chelsea manager, added: ‘I think if there’s 80,000 in the Bernabeu, no thank you.

‘But at that training ground, I fancy Chelsea. I said at half-time, Chelsea could go all the way.

‘Liverpool could still turn it around, let’s be fair. They haven’t got that normal 12th man they have at Anfield.
