Jurgen Klopp will be nervously awaiting updates from his medical team after Fabinho went down with a suspected hamstring problem in Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Midtjylland.

Virgil van Dijk’s serious knee injury means Fabinho has been filling in as a makeshift centre-back and the 27-year-old has stepped up superbly in the Dutchman’s absence alongside Joe Gomez.

But Fabinho went to ground in the 28th minute of an otherwise eventless first half at Anfield on Tuesday night and received treatment on the pitch before being replaced by academy product Rhys Williams at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

The versatile Brazilian has started all three of Liverpool’s games since Van Dijk tore his ACL after Jordan Pickford’s horror challenge in the Merseyside derby.

Scans showed that Van Dijk required surgery and the Netherlands international is expected to be sidelined for the best part of the season.

Reacting to Fabinho’s possible injury, ex-Liverpool striker Peter Crouch told BT Sport: ‘Van Dijk was a huge miss but Fabinho as well has been a fantastic replacement.

‘It just looked like a hamstring. Really disappointing and a huge blow for Liverpool.

‘They’ll be praying it’s not long-term.’

Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana added: ‘Typical. It happens.

‘The big centre-half is missing and it’s just typical that another one has a knock like that.

‘Hopefully it’s relatively minor and it’s not worth taking the risk.

‘But it’s another test for the group and the young lad (Williams) has come on, I thought he’s done very well considering he’s coming off the bench on a Champions League night.’
