Liverpool have begun talks over a move for PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands star Donyell Malen, who previously spent two years in the Arsenal academy system.

The 22-year-old was at Arsenal from 2015-17 before returning to his homeland and has gone on to start for PSV and become a regular with the national team.

Malen has been prolific for his club side, scored 40 goals in just 81 league appearances and earning himself 12 caps for Netherlands, scoring twice.

He has appeared in all three games at Euro 2020 so far, starting once and coming off the bench twice, providing two assists in the competition as his team topped their group with three wins.

Malen has caught the attention of a number of clubs, linked with Borussia Dortmund as a potential replacement for Jadon Sancho, but Liverpool appear to be at the head of the queue for his signature.

Sky Sport Germany report that talks have already begun for the Reds to bring the forward to Anfield this summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to mix things up in his front three.

The report suggests PSV would be looking for an offer of around £34m for their young star who is under contract at the club until 2024.

Malen has some passionate support among Netherlands fans, as was demonstrated when a small plane flew over the national team’s training base last week ahead of their final group game against North Macedonia.

The plane flew a banner for manager Frank de Boer which read: ‘Are you so smart Frank? Play Malen!’

The forward did start the game after coming off the bench in the first two matches.

If a deal can be done it will be Liverpool’s second of the transfer window so far after already securing the services of centre-back Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig for £36m.
