Lionel Messi was left bewildered by Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to substitute him during Paris Saint-Germain’s clash with Lyon.

PSG had been trailing in Sunday’s Ligue 1 contest with Neymar drawing his side level from the penalty spot after 66 minutes.

But with the French giants chasing a winner, Pochettino opted to replace the six-time Ballon d’Or winner with 15 minutes of the contest remaining.

On what was his home debut for the club following his arrival from Barcelona in the summer, Messi looked bemused with the decision, shrugging at the manager after exchanging words as they crossed paths on the touch line.

The feeling of confusion extended to the bench with one image showing countryman Leandro Parades and former Barcelona teammate Rafinha looking mystified by the decision.

Achraf Hakimi came onto replace the Argentine with another substitute Mauro Icardi getting the winner deep into injury time.

Messi has now failed to score in his first three games for PSG but was denied a sensational first after his free kick bounced back off the post against Lyon.

The 34-year-old drew a blank despite playing 90 minutes against Club Brugge midweek having made his debut off the bench against Stade Reims.

PSG have taken an early lead in the race for the French title having won their opening six games of the new season.
