Lineker hails "greatest display" from an England star after showing vs Denmark

Gary Lineker hailed Raheem Sterling’s performance against Denmark in England’s dramatic Euro 2020 2-1 semi-final win as “one of the greatest displays” ever from a Three Lions player.

Wembley was stunned when Mikkel Damsgaard put the visitors into the lead with a superb 25-yard free kick on the half-an-hour mark.

But a Simon Kjaer own goal drew England level before Harry Kane struck in extra time from a penalty rebound to seal a place in the final for his side to take on Italy on Sunday.

Sterling, who has starred throughout the tournament so far, put in a sensational showing, constantly tormenting the Denmark defence and winning the spot-kick which ultimately led to the deciding goal.

And Lineker took to Twitter after full-time to show his appreciation for the Manchester City man with the highest possible praise.

“There were some superb performances,” the BBC presenter said. “All the back 4 were outstanding, and as for @sterling7, well, that was one of the greatest displays I’ve seen from a player in an @England shirt. Stunning.”

Lineker also praised Denmark for their efforts, adding: “Well played to the Denmark team. You gave it everything and more. Your country should be very proud of you.

“Unbelievable. Finally after all these years. So bloody wonderful.”

Sterling himself was interviewed by ITV after the game, and appeared delighted with the team’s mental strength to come from behind to eventually win.

“It was a tough performance today, we had to dig in deep,” he said. “It’s the first time we’ve conceded in the tournament and I thought we coped, showed a good team spirit and came back to win the game.

“We knew it was difficult to go behind, got the equaliser and we knew we had to stay patient. We knew with the legs we have in the team, the aggressiveness, the power, it was only a matter of time before we brought them down, and we got the penalty in the end.

“It’s a big step in the right direction. Once we get back in the dressing room that’s it over, we’ve got to focus on the weekend now.

“Take it step by step, that’s all we can do.”
