The band have just hours left to steam or sell their album as many times as they can before the clock strikes midnight (on Thursday).
Limmy and Sanjeev Kohli who join Lord of The Rings star Elijah Woods in their bid to get the Scots band to number one with their album As The Love Continues both asked if the post rockers could be in Oor Wullie now that they are leading the way in the charts.
Sanjeev who played shopkeeper Navid in Still Game demaned: “Have Mogwai guested in Oor Wullie yet? Has Limmy guested in Oor Wullie yet?”
Limmy reponded: “Oor Mogwai, Your Mogwai, A’body’s Mogwai! #Mogwaifornumber1 and prompted The Wood Burning Savages singer Paul Connolly to make up a fake Oor Wullie cover with the band name.
Mogwai are close to having a U.K. number 1 album with Ladbrokes pricing them at 1/2 to top the Official UK Album Chart, making them favourites in the betting.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Mogwai seemingly have the backing of Hollywood in the race for that much-coveted number one spot, and it’s Elijah Wood’s support which makes them favourites to pip the likes of Foo Fighters and Ariana Grande to the post later this week.”
Franz Ferdinand, Arab Strap, Snow Patrol, Twilight Sad and author Caitlin Moran have also backed the band to top the charts.
Caitlin Moran remarked: “For years, “Kill Your Friends” author John Niven has been repeatedly teased over his A&R years, where he turned down Coldplay and signed Mogwai, instead, because he loved them. But now it looks like MOGWAI ARE GOING TO BE NUMBER ONE THIS WEEK. He was playing the long-game.”
Franz Ferdinand’s Bob Hardy also supported the band’s bid saying: ‘Look, Mogwai are #1 in the UK midweek charts. Buy their record to help keep them there and also just loop it on Spotify or whatever other streaming service for the rest of the week. Please let’s make this happen..
Primal Scream also urged fans: “Buy the new Mogwai album, help send it to # 1”
The battle for Number 1 on this week’s Official Albums Chart is heating up, as British rapper Ghetts closes in on the band.
As The Love Continues is Mogwai’s tenth studio album and potentially the Scottish rock group’s first Number 1 record, 25 years after the release of their debut single.
