Lena Dunham has opened up about her horrific 21-day battle with coronavirus, revealing she still has some of the lingering symptoms despite now being negative for the virus.

The Girls star, 34, spoke out in a lengthy post on Instagram in order to urge everyone to wear a mask after seeing people being ‘careless’ amid the ongoing pandemic.

Sharing a selfie of her in a mask, she captioned it: ‘My Covid Story’, telling her followers: ‘I’ve been reluctant to share this, having written and rewritten it anxiously.

‘I don’t want to unnecessarily add my voice to a noise landscape on such a challenging topic, as an unfathomable number of people have lost their lives to Covid-19 – a phrase we didn’t even know in January.

‘But seeing the carelessness with which so many in the United States are treating social distancing, people jogging without masks and parties on Instagram, I feel compelled to be honest about the impact this illness has had on me, in the hopes that personal stories allow us to see the humanity in what can feel like abstract situations.’

Lena was diagnosed with coronavirus in March, and was already immunocompromised before she caught it.

She continued: ‘The fact is, the Coronavirus kills people. We know that. But it will also alter the bodies and lived experiences of so many who are infected, in ways they could never have predicted.

‘In some odd sense I feel blessed to have entered this experience as a “sick” person; otherwise I don’t know how I would have tolerated crossing that threshold from well to unwell.’

Lena revealed that the symptoms started with ‘achy joints’ which is not unusual for her ‘usual diagnosis; until it was joined by ‘an impossible crushing fatigue. Then, a fever of 102.’

She says her body ‘revolted’ and she was left with burning nerves in her feet and numb hands as well as struggling to sleep but being too tired to wake up.

Lena added that she was sensitive to loud noises as well as losing her sense of taste and smell and had ‘a hacking cough, like a metronome keeping time. Inability to breathe after simple tasks like getting a glass of water.’

She admitted she was privileged to be seen by a doctor, though she wasn’t hospitalised for the virus and monitored herself with her own pulse oximeter to check the oxygen levels in her blood.

After 30 days she tested negative for the virus and was able to see her isolation pod again, admitting the loneliness had been ‘intense’.

She revealed that she had lingering symptoms, adding: ‘The doctor determined I was suffering from clinical adrenal insufficiency – my pituitary gland had almost entirely ceased function – as well as ‘status migrainosis,’ (in human terms, a migraine that just won’t stop).’

Lena told her followers not to treat the virus like you would treat passing a cold to your co-workers, ending her message: ‘It is critical we are all sensible and compassionate at this time … because, there is truly no other choice.’
