Leeds United will make a late assessment on Raphinha’s fitness ahead of their Premier League clash with Southampton on Saturday.

The 24-year-old played 71 minutes and scored twice in Brazil’s 4-1 victory over Uruguay in their World Cup qualifier in the early hours of Friday morning.

Raphinha immediately boarded a flight back to the UK and returned later that afternoon, less than 24 hours before Leeds’ Premier League fixture at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Leeds’ medical team will now make a call on Raphinha’s availability for the match but Marcelo Bielsa has already warned that they will not risk the Brazilian.

‘There’s no doubt it’s a short turnaround,’ Bielsa said on Thursday.

‘The options he has to participate on Saturday depends on whether he plays this final game tonight, how many minutes he plays, how he finishes the game after participating, how efficient the rest he can have in the next 36 hours is, considering a third of those hours will be spent flying.

‘If there is any risk that fatigue can cause injuries we won’t risk it.

‘So many aspects to consider I can’t offer certainties either way.’
