Leeds United picked up on Amazon Prime pundit Karen Carney’s comments during their 5-0 thrashing of West Brom on Wednesday night and posted the video on Twitter, causing a social media storm. Marcelo Bielsa’s side were rampant at the Hawthorns and sit 11th in the Premier League table.
Leeds ran away with the Championship title last term to return to the top flight for the first time in 16 years.
Even the disruption of the Football League season due to coronavirus did not derail their campaign.
However, ex-England star Carney claimed that the Whites would not have earned promotion without the mid-season break.
“They out-run everyone and credit to them,” Carney said on Amazon Prime. “My only concern is will they blow out at the end of the season. We have seen that the last couple of year.
“I don’t know whether they would have got up if they hadn’t got that break.”
Leeds tweeted out the video of Carney’s comments with the caption: “Promoted because of Covid. Won the league by 10 points. Hi @primevideosport.”
The Yorkshire side sparked a huge debate on social media on whether Bielsa’s high-energy, high-pressing football is sustainable for an entire season.
Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling sarcastically wrote: “Leeds so lucky that Covid intervened. They had only won five in a row before the season was suspended. Clearly running out of steam!!!”
Stelling was not the only person to question the pundit’s analysis, as one supporter wrote: “Who knows what would have happened. Leeds kept blowing it year after year, no one can deny that.
“At the end of the day Leeds deserved to win the Championship as they were the best team. Simple.”
And another added: “What an absolutely daft thing to say. Glad to see you’ve rightly pulled this lady up for spouting this absolute tripe.
“The standard of punditry in this country is abysmal.”
However, Carney did have her fair share of backers too.
“She’s bang on to be fair,” one supporter wrote. “Leeds bottle it every single year but the one year they have a break and are allowed 5 subs and drinks breaks they go up? No surprise.”
Another said: “I think she was trying to make a valid point that was up for discussion whether you agree or not.
“Leeds are a high intensity team and a break will have helped them. I think they would have gone up either way, but they did fall away season before. No need for lazy abuse mind.”
And a third user said: “Sounds mad but she has a valid point. Leeds late on have run out of steam and it has previously cost them.
“Whether it would of this season gone is debatable. This season we can only see.”
