A COUNCIL has angered drivers by introducing a speed limit of just 10mph.

It will apply while roadworks, expected to last for six months, are in place.

But the limit in Islington, North London, was quickly condemned by residents.

One 56-year-old driver said: “It’s a joke. It’s ridiculous . . . you just can’t get around.”

He added: “At 10mph, people are going to pile up behind each other.

“At traffic lights there’ll be a lot more people sitting there and that means there’s a lot more cars ticking over going nowhere.”

Vicky Cox, 47, added: “Surely the slower cars go, the more emissions are kicking up.”

The Labour-run council has painted the new restriction on St John Street, which usually has a 20mph limit.

However, the new limit only applies to a small section and data engineer Matt Simmons, 30, said: “I like the idea. There’s tons of cyclists in this area so I think it might make it a bit safer.”

The council said the temporary limit would be in place while a cycle track, rain gardens, trees, and other planting were installed.
