Kylian Mbappe is now talking like staying at Paris Saint-Germain beyond this season is a possibility after previously making it clear that he wanted to leave in the summer when his contract expires.

The 22-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is expected to join Real Madrid after trying to force through a move over the summer.

The striker asked to leave PSG and Real offered an incredible £189m for him, but the French side turned it down, willing to risk him leaving on a free transfer in 2022.

With no progress in agreeing a new deal, it was Real Madrid on a free that seemed the way Mbappe was heading, but he may now have changed his tune.

‘I don’t know. Today I have to take the time. It is not easy. Either way, I’ll be playing for a big club,’ Mbappe told Amazon Prime.

‘At first I was disappointed [not to leave]. But well, I am not in the third division, I am in a club that wants to win the Champions League.

‘I am Parisian, I have my family, I feel good, I have always said it. I just wanted to discover something else.’

PSG do indeed want to win the Champions League and they are 11 points clear at the top of Ligue 1, so silverware will come his way if he stays in Paris.

There is also the allure of continuing to play alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar in their star-studded front line. Although the superstars have not quite shone as brightly as expected since linking up together.

Mbappe has notched up seven Ligue 1 goals this season but his teammates are lagging behind with Neymar on three and Messi scoring just one so far and the Frenchman knows more is required from them.

‘We’re aware that we need to do more,’ he said. ‘When you have three players of that level, you can’t hide from it.

‘We need to do the things that keep us together as a collective. We each have to do our bit.’

It would be a remarkable turnaround for Mbappe if he did stay at PSG after admitting that he wanted to leave the club in October.

‘I asked to leave [in July] because from the moment I didn’t want to extend, I wanted the club to have a transfer fee to have a quality replacement,’ he told RMC Sport.

‘People have said that I’ve turned down six or seven offers for an extension, that I don’t want to talk to Leonardo anymore, that’s absolutely not true.

‘I wanted everyone to grow, to go out “hand in hand”, to make a good deal, and I respected that. I said, if you don’t want me to leave, I’ll stay.

‘I did not appreciate the idea that “yes, he came in the final week of August…” because that, that makes me sound like a thief. I said at the end of July I wanted to leave.’
